Kolbjorn explains the historical usage of fats, oils and waxes (e.g. olive oil, shea butter, etc) in different cultures. Comparisons are made between the damaging use of minerals in skin-care products and the many benefits of using vegetable oils and fats. Kolbjorn covers the use of fatty acids and stresses the importance of knowing which ones to avoid for particular skin types and conditions. Students learn about the most important vegetable oils and fats used in different skin products such as: moisturisers ointments gels eczema creams psoriasis creams Students receive several recipes and hand-outs that they can take home detailing how to tailor-make these products for specific skin types and conditions using natural materials, such as: Shea Butter Macadamia Nut Oil Sweet Almond Oil Apricot Kernel Oil Peach Kernel Oil Jojoba Oil Borage Oil Evening Primrose Oil Thistle / Safflower Oil Practical session: Following the demonstration by Kolbjorn of making a moisturising cream, questions can be asked before the students are divided into groups of 4 per table. Each group makes 200ml of cream which can be fragranced with essential oil. Students are able to take home 2 x 25ml jars of cream each. After lunch the same procedure is followed, this time making two different types of shampoo, followed by two types of gel and finally lip balms. Each student may take home 5 different lip balms that they have prepared during the course. The day is completed with a Questions & Answers session and the handing out of certificates. NOTE: Before learning how to make a product Kolbjorn will discuss the benefits of the product and demonstrate the exact utensils and raw materials required. ALL raw materials and utensils are provided and students usually work in groups of 4 per table. A printed hand-out of the recipe and technique is also given to each student at the beginning of making any product.
