What is it?

It is derived from brewers’ yeast, not sourced from animals or GM 8543 crops. Just as the name implies, Pseudo collagen mimics the action of collagen.  Pseudocollagen is a true moisturising glycoprotein taken from living cells. It is extracted from traditional brewer’s yeast by a controlled process which preserves its high molecular weight and native structure and enables it to confer desirable moisture-binding and film-forming properties to the skin. In this single product we offer you a combination of the best from the dermal protein and sugar worlds in a soluble, easily handled form that is an ideal substitute for animal-based collagen. Our suppliers have looked to yeast for a source of collagen-like material that will provide moisturisation for both skin and hair. Pseudo collagen has been extracted from the intra-cellular matrix from yeast cells in a water-soluble “Pseudo collagenous” form suitable for use in cosmetics. Pseudo collagen is the name that has been given to this cellular extract consisting of a moisturising complex of sugars and proteins. This complex is responsible for providing turgor and shape inside the cell in a similar way to sugar/ protein complexes in the dermis. It has been demonstrated that pseudo collagen has excellent moisture binding properties, making it especially suited as a soluble collagen replacement.
In order to appreciate the potential importance of pseudo collagen to cosmetic formulators, an understanding of the role of soluble collagen is required. Soluble collagen provides an important function in the skin matrix, not only for its structural properties, but also for its ability to help hold moisture in the dermis. Collagen fibrils provide the rigid dermal framework around which the moisture binding proteoglycan structure is woven. Elastin fibrils supply the whole structure due to their elasticity. The appearance of the skin is directly proportional to its ability to bind water. Upon ageing, the collagen and elastin content in connective tissue reduces with an accompanying decrease in ability to retain moisture. The skin becomes thinner, takes on an aged appearance and often develops wrinkles.

Water or oil-soluble?

Water-soluble.

Can I add it to oil serums or ready-made products?

You should not add it to oil serums or oil blends as it will separate but you can add it to all skin rejuvenating and moisturising already-made products. Simply stir in the correct dose thoroughly.

Recommended dosage and how to use in products

Dosage 0.5-10%. Add it during the third stage of making creams and lotions or when the temperature of the product you are making is under 40°C. 

Storage/Shelf Life

Keeps 2 years (see label for best before date). Store cool and dark.
