Organic Horse Chestnut Oil is a natural plant derived oil produced by gentle maceration of dried horse chestnut seeds in warm organic high oleic sunflower oil. With its nutrient rich profile and soothing texture this oil is perfect for massage oils, leg care blends and daily skincare routines.
Its profile includes aescin rich horse chestnut and antioxidant rosemary extract working together to give a refreshed and revitalized appearance. Unlike raw horse chestnut seeds, bark and other parts which are toxic if ingested, this oil is professionally formulated for safe topical use. The result is a pale yellow liquid with a mild nutty scent – easy to blend with other oils.
Horse Chestnut Oil is popular in leg, foot and body products making it a favorite for sports massage therapists and wellness focused brands. Used consistently it leaves the skin soft, hydrated and comfortable.
Composition of Horse Chestnut Seed Extract
Horse chestnut seed extract is a powerhouse of goodness, with aescin being the main active ingredient, usually 16-20% of the extract.
Aescin is responsible for the extract’s benefits, such as its skin balancing and antioxidant properties. The extract also contains flavonoids and triterpene glycosides which enhance the benefits.
When buying horse chestnut seed extract make sure the product has been processed to remove esculin, a toxic compound found in raw horse chestnut seeds.To enhance absorption and efficacy the extract is often diluted with a carrier oil like Helianthus annuus seed oil.
A pale yellow liquid with characteristicaroma is made from the seeds of the Aesculus Hippocastanum tree, which is colloquially known as the Horse Chestnut. The seeds are often called conkers. The organic Horse Chestnuts are macerated in warm (35 ̊C) organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil which is then filtered and 0.1% rosemary antioxidant is added to prevent oxidation of the oil.
The ratio is 37.1% dry horse chestnuts to 62.9% oil by weight, then 0.1% rosemary antioxidant extract added by weight. As this is a natural product, you may find sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Filter it out should it occur.
How to Use
- Horse Chestnut Seed Oil helps to promote a clear skin with an even complexion and good skin tone. It has a slight astringency which enhances these effects. Use in anti ageing creams, lotions and serums.
- Combine with Arnica Oil for pre and after sports products.
- Horse Chestnut Seed Oil in a massage oil blend is superb for pre and post massage sessions.
- It is an excellent oil to use in Gardeners Hand Creams or Winter creams.
- Use 4% to 30%.
- Oil soluble so cannot be used in water only products. It can be used in small amounts in water based gels that will hold it in suspension.
- Heat stable so can be used in Stage 1 (fat stage) when making creams and lotions.
- Suggested amounts are; Creams and Lotions use 4% to 12%
- Body Oils use 10% to 30% in a blend
- Whole Body Massage Oil use 10% to 20% in a blend
- Spider Vein Oil blends use 10% to 20%
Hair Care
- The high level of Stearic Acid in Horse Chestnut Seed Oil means it will be excellent at cleansing excess sebum from the scalp whilst conditioning the hair without making it feel lank or heavy and with no sticky residue. This also protects the hair shaft from damage. Use in shampoos and conditioning hair packs.
- High level of Omega 9 essential fatty acids keep the hair shaft soft and supple.

- Water and oil don't mix so unless you use a suitable solubilizer that will combine the oil and water together you will not be able to mix this up. Unfortunately we don't currently stock a solubilizer that can solubilize carrier oils.

- Thank you for your enquiry. Please see the below response from our Research and Development Team; "I do not know as very, very few oils cause a pore blocking problem. That is a marketing hype created to solve a problem that didn't really exist. High levels of saturated fats are the butters that may cause an issue, but certainly not always. If it helps you to find out, the carrier oil is high oleic sunflower seed oil which causes no problems that I am aware of."
