NB: For information about how to use Seaweed Body Wraps please click here Seaweed BenefitsSeaweed products have long been used by humans for food and healing. They are becoming increasingly popular for use as Spa and Thalassotherapy products. “Thalassa” is Greek for "sea" and lends its name to this unique method of preventative and curative treatment which uses the renowned therapeutic virtues of seawater and seaweed to oxygenate, tone, moisturise and revitalise the body and the skin. Scientists report that Seaweeds are rich in vitamins A1, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, E, K, pantothenic acid, folic acid, and niacin. They are an important supply of 60 trace elements and an excellent source of over 12 minerals, especially sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and manganese. In fact, Seaweeds contain much larger concentrations of what is present in seawater, and in a form, which can easily be assimilated. The potassium-sodium content of sea vegetables is usually quite close to that occurring naturally in the human body. Many marine algae are a source of vitamin B12, which is rarely found in land vegetables. The low occurrence of goitre (a malfunction of the thyroid gland) in
coastal regions where seaweed is traditionally consumed is often attributed
to their iodine content. Alginic acid is an important constituent of
the cell wall of brown seaweeds and it is mainly responsible for their
tensile strength and elasticity, essential for survival in turbulent
seawater. It acts as a natural cleanser for the intestines.

You need to have two people when making a Body Wrap. A Body Wrap is done in different stages on the body. This mix is enough for half the front and back of the body. It is suitable to wrap one side at a time, this means you need to make 2-3 mixes to cover half the body.

Carrageen Seaweed has been used by people living by the coast around the North Atlantic for many years. In Ireland it is known as Irish Moss and is used as food for humans and animals. Most of the moss is harvested by rakes from small boats. The rakes may be operated by hand only or drawn after a boat. The wet moss is brought to drying plants operated by the Carrageen manufacturers and dried to less than 20% humidity to preserve the quality of the Seaweed and facilitate transportation to the extraction plants.
Carrageen Seaweed is a polysaccharide when combined with water, form viscous compounds producing a variety of runny to more solid Gels. It can be used externally for infections and inflammations and internally in the mouth, throat, stomach and digestive tract where it coats the skin or mucous membranes with a protective film or barrier against mechanical or chemical damage. It relieves pain, is cooling and emollient (softening). It is easily dissolved in water.
It contains a wide range of minerals, vitamins and trace elements. It is a low calorie food. Much of the carbohydrate content is not actually absorbed by the human digestive system but passes through as fibre. Hence it is also a good source of roughage.
Dried Carrageen is good for Baths and Gels as it contains natural polysaccharides, which create viscous compounds. It can also be used in liquid soaps and shower gels to make your products softer and more gentle on the skin instead of salt. In a bath its softening and protective properties make it ideal for skin irritations and itchiness. Use 15-20g for a Whole Body Bath. Simply boil it for 15-20 minutes and add it to the bath water.
