Skincare for Acne Prone Skin

We’ve all had to deal with it at some point in our lives. Whether you are affected or you know people that are, acne is a disease that can affect everyone, not just people going through puberty.

It is a skin disease that leads to the appearance of pimples or blackheads and whiteheads as well as causes oily skin and scars. It is a result of a rise of sebum on the face but also on the back and sometimes shoulders. Everyone can be affected by acne but it is mostly common during puberty.

Acne prone skin can lead to discomfort and self-esteem issues for the people suffering from it and many methods that are sometimes harsh and extreme have been considered.

While the causes of acne are numerous and genetics play a huge role in its presence, we wanted to show you simple ways that help prevent acne from spreading and thus reduce the chance of scarring.

INTRODUCE A TONER TO YOUR ROUTINE

A good toner will help with sensitive or problem skin and it will help get essential actives into the skin. Most toners available contain alcohol that should help with the drying of the skin, but they are in fact too harsh for the skin and will lead to the body attacking back by producing more oil, which is the opposite of the desired effect.

Consider using a toner with Witch Hazel Water, that naturally contains 10% ethanol and is a strong antioxidant and a classic astringent skin toner. Mix it with other products to help renourish the skin.

The infamous Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that will help reducing redness and will prevent acne from appearing.

GET INTO A ROUTINE A CLEANSING

Cleansing helps opening pores up to allow a deeper cleaning of the skin, which is ideal when fighting acne. An oil cleanser will be more effective, using Jojoba Oil or Castor Oil.

For even more results, introduce double cleansing in your routine. It helps to remove any oil based products off your skin, as well as water based products. Your skin will thank you!

USE THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS

Unfortunately, no miracle products exist to cure acne completely. But there are ingredients that have been proved to be beneficial to help acne appearance and optimize the healing process.

As well as Witch Hazel water, Tea tree is an efficient way to kill bacteria.

If you wish to stop your pores from getting clogged, consider Salicylic acid.

Camphor is anti inflammatory and helps reducing the redness of the skin on the body. It is not ideal for the face but great to use on the body.

Cedarwood Virginiana has a strong astringent effect that helps with skin breakouts. It is also an antiseptic and antibacterial and reduce the size of the skin’s pores.

CONSIDER THOSE TREATMENT

Clay masks are incredibly purifying and helps clean the pores of unwanted dirt and pollution. As a bonus, it also absorbs the accumulated excess oils present in your skin. Great, right?

If one area of your face is becoming too painful, then consider using a Spot Gel, which will also help counter the appearance of pimples.

Exfoliating is an important step in anyone’s beauty routine as it detoxifies the skin of dirt and dead skin. When it comes to acne, peeling gels are a better option than physical exfoliants. Be on the look out for products containing AHA, Papaya extracts, vitamin A (rosehip oil is naturally rich in vitamin A), Jojoba oil (rich in oil similar to the one produced naturally by the skin, the infamous sebum, it is good for softening the pores). Implement this exfoliating routine weekly followed by:
> Massage into skin for a minute or two, remove with warm / hot face towel
> Use regular cleanser
> Toner
> Moisturise (gel moisturiser)

GET INTO NEW HABITS

To further help the diminishing of acne, a few lifestyle changes might help you prevent the spreading of bacteria:

Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things in life. It will also help clarify and moisturize the skin.

Change your pillowcase more often. Bacteria and contaminated skin will accumulate on your pillow case after a while. Remember to change it often!

Do not fiddle with your spots. Touching a pimple is so tempting but it will most likely cause the bacteria to spread. This is why it is also good to avoid touching your face during the days as as your hands come in contact with so many bacteria infected surface!
