Shea Butter Oil is a luxurious, emollient-rich nut oil from the shea nut, which comes from the fruit of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). Shea nuts have been traditionally harvested in West Africa, where shea trees are native and play a big part in local communities. The oil is often cold pressed to preserve its good stuff and is liquid, so it’s easy to use topically and safe for skin and hair.
This nourishing ingredient is extracted, fractionated, and refined to improve stability and stop oxidation. It is a clear to yellow oil with a soft, neutral scent and good skin compatibility. It has a higher oleic acid content than shea butter, so it’s lightweight, absorbs easily, and is suitable for all skin types. Shea Butter Oil also has phenolic compounds, which are antioxidants and help protect skin cells.
This lightweight oil is great for skincare and haircare formulations, and retains moisture without feeling heavy or greasy. It’s a key ingredient in many shea products, moisturisers, and cream-based formulations. High in oleic and linoleic acids and nutrients makes it good for dry, mature, and sensitive skin types. Shea Butter Oil is non-comedogenic and doesn’t clog pores, so safe for all skin types. A staple in cosmetic formulations, Shea Butter Oil can be used on its own or mixed with other plant-based oils like coconut oil, cocoa butter, or aloe vera to create a well-balanced blend that soothes, softens, and replenishes skin and hair.
You can also mix with essential oils like lavender oil or tea tree oil – just add a few drops for fragrance or added benefits. For hair care, it’s great for dry hair and can be applied to damp hair or used as an overnight treatment for deep conditioning.
Use Shea Butter Oil in creams, lotions, balms, body butters, and serums to support a calm and nourished complexion. It retains moisture, tames frizz, and is suitable for addressing skin issues such as wrinkles, stretch marks, and environmental stress caused by external factors. For best results, just apply the oil directly to skin or hair as a topical application to support skin cell health.
In skin products, Shea Butter Oil helps improve the appearance and texture of dry, flaky, or rough patches. It’s gentle enough to use on face, body, and hands. For sensitive skin, the oil helps maintain moisture levels and promotes a smoother skin texture.
In haircare, Shea Butter Oil provides deep hydration to dry strands, reducing frizz and improving manageability. For best results, just apply Shea Butter Oil to damp hair as an overnight treatment to deeply condition and restore moisture. It’s great for textured or damaged hair when used as part of an oil treatment or as an ingredient in conditioners.
Shea Butter Oil is excellent to use in small amounts in facial products, under 3%. Elsewhere on the body, much higher levels can be used to great effect.
It is a superb emollient and is excellent for conditioning the skin and moisturising the skin.
Shea Butter Oil contains a natural SPF, but this is not high enough to be used as a sun protection product.
It is protective, especially for dry skin. It rehydrates sun-damaged skin and can give the appearance of younger and fresher-looking skin.
Shea Butter Oil softens the hair without it feeling sticky, heavy or lank. It is superb to use in hair products, especially for dry and processed hair.
It can be used in hair packs.
The high levels of Omega 9 make Shea Butter Oil useful for hair treatments to stop breakage, especially with over-processed hair.
