About this product
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Evening primrose oil is a thin, clear yellow oil with a slight oily odour. It is obtained by pressing the seeds of the evening primrose flower before being filtered and refined.
This liquid evening primrose oil has 0.5% vitamin E (tocopherol) added as an antioxidant, which will reduce the potential oxidation of the oil while it is in the bottle. This has been added in the form of sunflower seed oil to make the tocopherol pourable. This is the only way to ensure a potent and effective product.
As evening primrose oil is a thin, dry-feeling oil easily absorbed by the skin, it’s ideal for products that are best with a non-greasy texture. Our liquid evening primrose oil works well in eye creams, anti-ageing serums and everyday facial creams.
Evening primrose oil is high in essential fatty acids and can help to soften and smooth the skin. Its emollient and antioxidant properties make it an excellent moisturiser and skin protector.
Typical Fatty Acid Profile of Evening Primrose Oil:
- C16:0 Palmitic Acid: 5% to 7%.
- C18:0 Stearic Acid: 1% to 3%.
- C18:1 Oleic Acid (Omega 9): 5% to 18%.
- C18:2 Linoleic Acid (Omega 6): 60% to 75%.
- C18:3 Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3): max 0.5%.
- C18:3 Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA): min 9%.
Our evening primrose oil has a saponification value of 185-195.
Cosmetic Functions:
The Cosmetic Ingredient Database (CosIng) lists evening primrose oil as a “skin conditioning — emollient”.
HOW TO USE IT
- Use 1% to 100%. However, you can achieve a good working level with up to 10%.
- Evening primrose oil is oil-soluble and should not be used in water-only products. However, you may use small amounts in water-based gels, where the oil is held in suspension.
- Although this oil is stable at temperature, its valuable GLA content is damaged by heat. When making creams and lotions, use it in the cool-down stage (stage 3).
Try blending evening primrose oil with rosehip seed oil, thistle oil and vitamin E for sensitive skin.
Blend it with hazelnut oil, rosehip seed oil, epidermis and sebum balancer and vitamin A for oily skin.
