Product Description

Organic Rosemary Extract CO2 is a thick, dark brown botanical extract from dried leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. This method preserves the plant’s natural antioxidants – mainly carnosic acid and carnosol – which are very effective in extending the shelf life of vegetable oils, butters, and oil-based formulations. The presence of these compounds enhances their antimicrobial activity and is effective against microbial growth and biofilm formation.

In cosmetic manufacturing, oxidation is one of the main cause of reduced product performance and shelf life. By adding Organic Rosemary CO2 Extract to your formulations,

you can slow down the oxidation process and maintain product integrity, scent, texture, and colour without synthetic preservatives. The extract can also darken lighter coloured oils, which may be a consideration in your formulations.

Unlike rosemary essential oil, which is known for its aromatic benefits, this CO2 extract is a powerful antioxidant and ideal for functional skincare and haircare formulations. A little goes a long way – it’s cost-effective and efficient. The different extracts of rosemary have different activity patterns, including antioxidant properties, which contribute to their therapeutic effects.

Even though this botanical extract comes from the Rosemary plant, it is not the same as Rosemary essential oil and the essential oil does not have the antioxidative properties of the extract. The two products are in no way interchangeable.

How to Use

Skin Care

• Oils that are very high in polyunsaturated fatty acids are immensely beneficial to the skin, but they have a very short shelf life, often less than six months.
  
  
• A very small amount of Organic Rosemary Antioxidant will substantially slow down the oxidation of these oils, meaning they can benefit the skin for longer.

Hair Care

• No direct hair usage, but if your hair product contains a polyunsaturated fatty acid oil, then it could be included.

Other

• Use 0.05% to 0.1% when working solely with saturated fats like Cocoa Butter and Macadamia Oil.

• Use at 0.2% to 0.4% with predominantly Polyunsaturated fatty acids like Kiwi Seed Oil and Rosehip Seed Oil.
  
  
• It is more stable than Vitamin E as an antioxidant, although it is more commonly used for the shelf life of the product.
  
  
• When using blends of oils, consider which ones are the most vulnerable to oxidation and what their ratio is in the blend.
  
  
• Oil soluble, so it cannot be used in water-only products.
  
  
• When making oil-only blends, Rosemary Antioxidant can make the finished blend darker.
  
  
• We have found that using a low percentage of EcoSilk in the blend helps to keep the blend a little lighter in colour.
  
  
• It does depend on the blend, so experiment with small amounts first.
