Product Description

Squalane is a highly stable skincare emollient derived from olive oil. It is a chemical compound and a stable lipid, colourless, transparent, and odourless, making it a versatile choice for cosmetic formulations. Its lightweight texture ensures rapid absorption into the skin without leaving a greasy residue.

Naturally, the body produces squalene as part of human sebum, which helps keep the skin moisturised. Sebum contains squalene, a compound that helps to keep skin moisturised. However, squalene is unstable and oxidises quickly when exposed to air. This is what causes sebum in clogged pores to turn black, forming blackheads. For this reason, unmodified squalene is not recommended for cosmetic use. Squalene is found in both animals and plants, but most modern squalane is plant-derived. Squalene levels in the body decrease with age, especially after age 30, which can lead to the skin becoming dry and flaky. Diet can also influence the body's natural production of squalene and overall skin health.

Squalane (with an “a”) is a hydrogenated and stable form of squalene, offering all the cosmetic benefits of hydration and softness without the instability. Unlike squalene, it does not oxidise, making it an excellent choice for long-lasting skincare formulations.

At Aromantic, we only supply olive-derived squalane, ensuring a vegan, cruelty free option. Some markets still use shark liver oil as a source of squalene, and sharks have historically been a major source, raising environmental concerns, but we are committed to sustainable and ethical alternatives.

By mimicking the skin’s natural moisturising components, squalane is similar to the skin's own oils and helps maintain the skin's barrier, supporting a smooth and calm complexion, reducing the appearance of redness, and leaving the skin feeling nourished. Squalane also helps address visible signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

How to use it

Skin Care

• Squalane softens the skin and improves its elasticity of the skin.
  
  
• Ideal to use in dry skin creams and lotions, and oil-based serums.
  
  
• As it has an identical structure to the sebum that is naturally found in the skin, it sinks in very fast and prevents moisture loss.
  
  
• Use this attribute in Winter protection creams and whenever skin is in need of a moisture lock.
  
  
• In lip balms, it improves the sensorial feel of the balm and reduces any skin drag. The lip balm will feel much more elegant and be even better at keeping the lips soft and moisturised.
  
  
• All massage oil blends will be improved by using Squalane.
  
  
• Extremely effective in night creams and intensive serums.
  
  
• As Squalane has the same structure as the skin’s sebum, it can help acne-prone skin very much.
  
  
• It can have the effect of a “solvent” by combining with the sebum and allowing it to leave the pores more readily.
  
  
• Most effective when used with a mask after steaming.

• Very restorative to weather-damaged skin from windburn to dry skin from sunburn.

Hair Care

• Some oils, like Castor Oil, can be very beneficial to the hair, but on their own, they are too sticky and unpleasant to use. Combining with Squalane makes the whole oil mixture feel lighter and more elegant.

Other

• It can be used neat, but we feel it is always better blended with other ingredients as it also enhances the other ingredients' efficacy.
  
  
• Usage can be 1% to 100% but we feel that 3-15% in your products is a very good balance.
  
  
• It is heat stable up to 80°C, or just added at room temperature.
  
  
• It is oil-soluble, so it cannot be used in water-based products such as toners and spritzes.
  
  
• A small amount could be added to water-based gels.
  
  
• Combine with Camellia Seed Oil for enhance skin flexibility.
  
  
• Add to massage blends that contain Castor Oil to make the blend feel better and have more slide.
  
  
• Blend with Camellia Seed Oil, Argan Oil, White Poppy Seed oil and a little Castor Oil to make a sprayable hair pomade.
