Inci: Bertholletia excelsa Seed Oil
What is it?
It is a clear to light yellow oil that is almost odourless. Actually, what we commonly refer to as a brazil nut is in fact a seed and this is what is pressed to give this wonderful oil.Sap value 193. We also have an organic version of this oil.
Action/Benefits
It is a very nourishing oil that is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins that helps to lubricate the skin and keep it moisturised. Its rich selenium content is a good antioxidant for the skin.It leaves the skin soft and smooth and forms a protective layer that slows down TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss). This keeps the skin well hydrated.
It is a natural emollient with a light texture.
The typical essential fatty acid profile is:
Oleic Acid: 36%
Linoleic Acid: 41.7%
Palmitic Acid: 16%
Stearic Acid: 3.8%
Arachidic Acid: 0.4%
Palmitoleic Acid: 0.1%
Myristic Acid: 0.4%
How to use it
Excellent for dry, cracked and all mature skin types. Use in creams, lotions and gels.Use in aftershave creams and aftershave balms to soften the skin and keep it hydrated. Also softens the beard stubble for the next time you shave.
Use in products for dry, brittle and damaged hair. Use in hair conditioners and hair packs at 3% to 10% along with hair oils such as Argan Oil, White Poppy Seed Oil, Camellia Seed Oil and Broccoli Seed Oil. Use Emulsifying Wax as the emulsifier to make excellent hair packs.
It is safe to use the oil at 100% on the face and body but its effects will be enhanced even more if it is blended with other ingredients. Use in oil based serums with oil soluble actives such as Coenzyme Q10 plus E, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Remodelling Intense.
Keeps the lips very pliable when used in lip balms.
The antioxidant content helps to reduce cell and tissue damage so use in acne products along with Bog Myrtle Essential Oil.
It contains phytosterols which are used to calm down inflammation and ulceration of the skin and stimulate the healing process. It also increases the speed of cell renewal. Improve this even more by using Shea Butter, Helichrysum Essential Oil with Lavender Essential Oil. This makes it an excellent choice for eczema prone and psoriasis prone skin as well as anti ageing products.
Use in massage oils and massage bars along with other oils to give a greater slip such as Castor Oil, EcoSilk and Jojoba Oil.

We have given percentages here as this is the easiest way to work. When making smaller amounts, we assume that 10% is a similar amount to 10ml of oil or 10g of butter or powders. However, when making larger amounts, they are not the same. Decide whether you want to use measuring cylinders or scales or both in your recipes. Weighing all materials gives the best accuracy.
