Product Description
Organic Shea Butter Filtered and Deodorised is a luxurious natural butter renowned for its moisturising and skin-softening properties. This refined butter is sourced from wild shea trees in Ghana and is certified organic, meeting strict certification standards for quality and purity.
This lovely Shea Butter is produced by a women's cooperative in Ghana. The ripe nuts of the shea tree are collected by the women after the nuts have fallen to the ground. The green edible peel is removed and the nuts are sun dried before being roasted and kneaded by hand to produce the soft shea butter. The women also hand weave the baskets used to transport the finished shea butter.
After washing with water to remove impurities and skimming/separating the butter from the water, the crude solid butter is transported to the refining plant in Holland where it is received by a certified importer for organic oils and fats. There the butter is melted, then bleached, filtered and deodorised. Once this process is complete the butter is cooled and packed. The final butter is white to pale yellow in colour with a faint characteristic odour – perfect for sensitive skin and fragrance-free formulations.
Shea butter is derived from the fruit of the shea (karite) tree, with the butter extracted from the seeds inside the fruit. The product is also known as karité, and traditional harvesting methods help preserve the minerals and nutrients that make this butter exceptional for skincare and haircare.
It is a superb emollient and is excellent for conditioning the skin. The butter is thick and smoother than some other types, melting easily on contact with skin.
Fatty Acid Profile and Skin Benefits
Its fatty acid profile makes it excellent for restoring skin suppleness and maintaining a balanced, comfortable complexion:
Typical Fatty Acid Profile:
- Palmitic Acid: 3% - 9%
- Stearic Acid: 34% - 50%
- Oleic Acid (Omega 9): 38% - 50%
- Linoleic Acid (Omega 6): 2% - 9%
The high stearic and oleic acid content provides rich emollience and helps support the skin's natural moisture barrier. It also contains natural phytosterols and vitamin E (tocopherols) that nourish and support the skin's protective barrier.
Shea butter contains naturally occurring compounds that may provide minimal daily protection against environmental stress, though the level is not high enough to be used as a sun protection product. It is particularly beneficial for re-hydrating sun-exposed skin and helping maintain skin elasticity.
Production Process
The journey of shea butter from tree to jar is rooted in tradition and craftsmanship. Shea nuts are harvested from the African shea tree, then sun-dried to preserve their natural goodness. Once dried, the nuts are roasted over an open fire, which helps release the rich butter within. The roasted nuts are then milled and hand-kneaded, a process that separates the pure butter from any impurities.
This traditional method results in unrefined shea butter with a creamy texture, a nutty aroma, and a wealth of naturally occurring compounds and fatty acids. The butter is then refined in Holland through a careful process of bleaching, filtering, and deodorising. This refinement creates a smoother, milder butter with minimal scent—perfect for sensitive skin and fragrance-free cosmetic formulations—while preserving the beneficial fatty acid profile and phytosterols.
By supporting these traditional harvesting techniques combined with careful refinement, the production of this shea butter not only delivers a high-quality, nutrient-rich product but also empowers local women and sustains communities across West Africa.
What is Natural Skincare
Natural skincare focuses on fragrance-free, gentle, and effective ways to care for the skin using pure, plant-based ingredients. Shea butter is at the heart of this movement with its blend of fatty acids, phytosterols, and naturally occurring vitamin E. Extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree, refined shea butter is renowned for moisturising dry skin and soothing chapped skin without the need for synthetic additives. Full of beneficial compounds, shea butter protects and nourishes the skin, supports the skin's barrier, and gives a healthy, radiant glow. As a multi-purpose butter, it's great for those looking to go more organic and holistic in their skincare.
At Aromantic, we've been championing this natural approach since 1997, carefully sourcing ingredients like this organic shea butter from ethical cooperatives that support local communities and sustainable practices.
Organic Products
This shea butter is deodorised, filtered, and therefore refined. It contains naturally occurring vitamin E (tocopherols) and beneficial fatty acids that provide deep hydration and nourishment to the skin. In addition to personal skincare benefits, organic farming practices help support local communities, reduce environmental impact, and preserve biodiversity.
This shea butter is certified organic and COSMOS approved, meeting the strict standards you'd expect from Aromantic. Look for trusted certifications such as the Soil Association or COSMOS to ensure your shea butter is pure, ethical, and made with natural ingredients, allowing you to enjoy the full advantages of organic skincare.
How to use it
Usage Rate:
- Use 1% - 100%. In facial products, we would not recommend using more than 3% as this is already an effective level.
Important Formulation Tip:
- When adding shea butter to your formulations, don't overheat it, as this can cause the butter to crystallise when it cools down. This then feels gritty in the finished cream. It is better to keep it melted at a low heat for a few minutes longer as this allows to fatty esters to melt better.
Applications:
- Use in creams, lotions, serums, night creams, hair packs, massage blends, baby products, hair treatments, lip balms, soaps, eczema, and psoriasis-prone skin, chapped and dry sore skin.
- Excellent when blended with Vitamin E to help nourish damaged skin.
