About this product
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Pomegranate seed oil is a thin, fluid oil with a pale yellow to golden colour. It has a slightly nutty or woody aroma and is obtained by cold pressing the washed seeds of the pomegranate fruit.
Pomegranate seed oil is the only known botanical source of punicic acid, also known as omega-5. This rare essential fatty acid makes up approximately 65% of the fatty acid content in pomegranate oil, making this natural cosmetic ingredient a must-have for your skincare cabinet. Punicic acid is an excellent antioxidant, protecting the skin against free radical damage and combating premature signs of ageing.
Pomegranate oil also contains ellagic acid, a natural phenol antioxidant. These two natural substances combined make this oil extremely nourishing and a great choice for maintaining healthy skin. Applied topically, pomegranate seed oil can rejuvenate the skin and stimulate collagen production. It can also be used in hair care treatments to promote hair growth.
Typical Fatty Acid Profile of Pomegranate Seed Oil:
- C16:0 Palmitic Acid: 1% to 5%.
- C18:0 Stearic Acid: 2% to 1-%.
- C18:1 Oleic Acid (Omega 9): 3% to 20%.
- C18:2 Linoleic Acid (Omega 6): 3% to 15%.
- C18:3 Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3): max 5%.
- C18:3 Punicic Acid (Omega 5)): 60 to 86%.
Our pomegranate seed oil has a saponification value of 185.
Cosmetic Functions:
The Cosmetic Ingredient Database (CosIng) lists pomegranate seed oil as a “skin conditioning — emollient”.
HOW TO USE IT
- Use 1% to 100%. However, this oil is so potent that you can use as little as 1% for effective results. We generally recommend 1%-3% in formulations.
- Pomegranate seed oil is oil-soluble and should not be used in water-only products. It can, however, be used in water-based gels that hold it in suspension.
- This oil is heat stable and can be used in the fat stage (stage 1) when making creams and lotions.
To prevent your pomegranate seed oil from oxidising, blend it with other antioxidants such as vitamin E or rosemary antioxidant.
Mix pomegranate seed oil with organic pomegranate glycerol extract for an effective combination in anti-ageing skincare products.
Pomegranate seed oil also works well in sports massage blends. Try adding 2% to a massage blend alongside fragonia essential oil and plai essential oil.
This oil is also very nourishing in hair treatments. Combine it with camellia seed oil, liquid coconut oil and argan oil for superb results.
